A paradise
In all of history, the notion of paradise was important. Its power lies in its capacity to make life meaningful and bearable regardless of the fact that it is always temporary. Paradise is a place of peace and prosperity. It is a place outside of normal historical time and is therefore immune to disease, crime or death. It is also a land that is inhabited by people who are always healthy and young.
Paradise has been described in a variety of ways from the biblical Garden of Eden to the lush Pacific Ocean island paradises of novels and Gauguin paintings. It can even be seen in the modern world thanks to the rise of communes and the growing interest in outdoor living and gardening. The term "utopian" actually, invokes images of a paradise. Although not all utopias are based on religion however, they usually incorporate paradisial motifs and are designed to reflect some of the characteristics of paradise in actual conditions.
The word paradise has many different meanings, but they all describe a state or condition of extreme beauty and pleasure. It can also be an ideal location for a particular sport or hobby. For example the golfer's paradise or a hummingbird's. In the context of religion it could be a reference to heaven, the home of the righteous after death.
Many languages have utilized the word paradise, however it was first used in the ancient Iranian language of Avestan. The word is pairidaeza, or "walled enclosure," from the roots pairi, "around," and daeza, "wall." It became part of the Hebrew and other Aramaic texts as paradeisos, and later changed to Greek, where it became paradise.
In the Bible, the Garden of Eden is paradise. It was a beautiful location where the first couple lived, free of illness and death. The paradise was lost, however, after they disobeyed God. In later Bible prophecies, paradise is seen as a place in the eschatological future where the happy people of the world will live forever. The word paradise is also used to refer to a spiritual or psychological state that is full of joy and happiness.
